We are a growing medical device company, based in Galway, and dedicated to reducing the burden of diabetic foot ulcers to patients and healthcare systems. We sit at the overlap of the high growth areas of medical device and connected health, and have developed a novel thermovisual foot scanner and remote monitoring system to detect issues early and prevent ulcer development. In 2021 the European Union recognised the scale of the problem and the novelty of the companies solution, and announced a significant investment to fund commercialisation of the technology and growth of the company.

Principal R&D Engineer Role and Responsibilities We have developed a cutting-edge foot scanner device that which enables combined thermal and visual imaging of the sole of the human foot in a low-profile home-use product. The scans from the device are sent to the cloud for remote monitoring. The first-generation product will enter clinical trials in the coming months. We are seeking a high calibre candidate to join our strong cross functional engineering team.

You will report to the Director of Product Development. You will have involvement at all phases in the product development process, from concept generation through to commercialisation and manufacturing. This role will involve collaboration with various departments, team members, and suppliers.

Activities will include:

  • Distilling clinical, user, and business needs into design input requirements.
  • New concept generation - Ideation, prototyping, testing, reporting.
  • Characterisation - Designing and executing experiments. Analysing data collected, generating and validating models that describe the response, communicating results.
  • Optimisation - Refine and optimise design ahead of adoption into the next generation commercial device.
  • Root cause investigation - determining problem root causes when issues arise.
  • Assist in the generation of intellectual property.
  • Participate in FMEAs, design verification and validation activities.
  • Coach junior engineers and delegate work as required.
  • Liaise with external vendors to access new tools, technologies, and capabilities. You will part of the core R&D group in a small but growing company (<20 people) with global ambitions. You will report directly to the Director of Product Development and have an influential role in the direction of technology development over the coming years. The ideal candidate will enjoy the overlap between medical technology and connected health / IOT. You will be a self-starter, who can identify and lead the execution of new tasks as required. You will be able to effectively communicate results with people of different levels of technical background.

Requirements

  • Third level degree in relevant field (Engineering, Design, Science etc).
  • 7+ years of related experience (medical device development, manufacturing, regulated industry).
  • Experienced in taking ownership of projects; from agreeing goals, to management of activities, to implementation of findings.
  • Passion for working on cutting edge technologies and product delivery.
  • Team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Ambitious, and motivated to make an impact with high attention to detail.
  • Experience of the medical device design control process.
  • Experience in conducting FMEA's, verifications and validations activities, and design reviews.
  • Experience of commercial medical device manufacturing processes and controls is desirable.
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis software is desirable (eg, Minitab, Python, R). Benefits
